How to Hand Baste

Easier to remove than a machine basted stitch, because is essentially a longer running stitch which is easy to remove. An added benefit of hand basting it is easier to maintain control; the drawback is it is considerably more time consuming than machine basting.

  • Pin the area you would like to sew together
  • Thread the hand sewing needle, then tie a knot at the end of the tread to secure the thread
  • Create a knot in the edge of the fabric where it will not be sewn over by a sewing machine
  • It is important to not that when basting your stitches you do not want to place the stitches exactly where your final stitches, as sewing over final stitches may cause weakening of final stitches.
  • Have the sewing machine ‘punch’ through the fabric, to the other side of the fabric and then back again to the fabric side you started sewing on
  • Repeat this process until the entire area you want basted is completely filled the size of the basted stitches is irrelevant to effectiveness but it is important to note that all of the basted stitches are removable. You can test removability by tugging on the thread and testing if it easily moves through the fabric.
  • Stitch one to two stitches at the end of your basting to secure

Note: Use contrasting thread, as higher visibility of the contrasting color will allow for easier removal.
